Why are Blow Pokes made like an Antique.

To be clear, Blow Pokes are not as old as you might think.

BlowPokes are actually a fairly new invention. barely 75 years old. In 1941, the US Patent Office granted a patent for the blowpoke to James Smith. So according to the US Patent office, no previous product of this sort existed in America. And so far, I have not seen any evidence (written record or historical artifact) of any earlier blowpoke-like tools.

The original Blow Poke was introduced in 1941 – at the start of World War Two. That puts blowpokes right in line with the development of jet planes, rockets, and the Atom Bomb… hardly an Antique!

The real story may be the fact that such an effective firetool took so long to be “invented”.

Archeologists date our learning to use wood fires to around 75 thousand years ago. That’s long before civilization began somewhere around some 6,000 years ago. Mankind and Womenkind have been “fanning the flames” for eons. We’ve lived in close harmony with wood fires; warmed and fed by wood fires on a daily basis… starting, building and tending millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions of fires. And the Blow Poke doesn’t get invented until we’re building jet planes and the Atom Bomb?

I remember seeing my first blow poke… it made that kind of impression. It struck me as both an obviously effective fireplace tool and a long fireplace poker. And I’d never seen one included in any fireplace toolsets. Where’d they been hiding all of my life?

The Blowpoke’s Origin Story

The origin story says that James H. Smith, returned home to coastal Maine after serving in World War One. And he patented his US “blowpoke” invention after being inspired when he saw French farmers using an old rifle barrel to blow and poke their fire. Smith sold his first Blo-Pokes to the original New York sporting goods retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch almost 20 years after returning from France. In the early 50’s, the Smiths sold the business to William Burt. And he eventually sold it to his cousin Stuart Burt. Stuart moved it to the historic town of Guilford, CT. That’s where I first saw a blowpoke – leaning beside the fireplace at my future in-laws home. Their home is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. And it’s surrounded by homes built at the peak of year-round wood burning in America. The blowpoke looked like a beautiful antique in their home full of antique furniture.

Stuart Burt was a close friend of my wife’s family, and he gave us our first blowpoke as a wedding gift. After he died, his family sold the business, and it was moved out of New England.

Driven by curiosity, I’ve found three relatively recent origin possibilities for blowpoke-like firetools. One is from Montreal, Canada (very close to coastal Maine) and it cites a very similar story from the same time: seeing a French farmer blow through a rifle barrel during WW1. The second cites a recent French fairy tale about a hollowed wooden stick called a bouffadou.  And the third comes from the Philippines. I assume it would be crafted by drilling bamboo. Called “ihip” (meaning: to blow, pronounced: eheep), is from Tagalog, the Filipino national language (which was also created fairly recently by combining various local dialects). So “ihip” is not an old word. (note: “ihip” appears to be more widely known in the Philippines than “blow poke” is known here in the US.) All of these origin stories appear to support the very short – very recent – history of the concept of a blowpoke, and that Blow Pokes are new firetools.

 

Blowpoke’s more recent history

Blow Pokes were first sold through a few specialty retailers. Their marketing appears non-existant. And the timing coincided with the arrival of new home heating technologies from gas and oil controlled by thermostats taking over for coal and wood. This probably blunted the need many had for a new wood burning firetool.

I learned that after the 1941 US Patent expired around 1960, the original Blo-Poke was “copied” by others in the fireplace industry. Using overseas contract manufacturing has become the usual way sellers obtain their products.

  • Brass blow pokes are being replicated by brass foundry companies that also market and sell a wide variety of brass items; many of which are often made to look like “Antiques”.
  • Brass Blow Poke “Knock-Offs” are currently imported from India, Taiwan and China for sale in the US.
  • The design of blow pokes is basically unchanged in the 75 years since its introduction. The big exception is the tiny tip. The 5/8″ tall poke-fin gives way to a range of other “plug-in” poke tips.
  • The “solid brass” construction and 4-foot length meant they are relatively heavy, and need two hands to hold and poke.

The main innovation at that time was the marketing of the Blow Poker – with an “r”. Two fireplace industry wholesalers imported less expensive, rustic looking black Blow Pokers. These had more useful looking poker tips, the kind that you’d associate with fire pokers.

  • More conventional looking poker tips appear more helpful.
  • But AIR BLOWING Performance appears to be a low priority (small blow holes).
  • Some low-cost blow pokers even left off the mouthpiece entirely.
  • “Rustic” seems to mean low tech production, and low-cost materials.
  • Again, these are also 4-feet long , heavy and require 2 hands to hold and poker

Brass Blowpokes and Black Blowpokers were both offered by Fireplace Dealers in the 70’s and 80’s. But dealers told me they were never big sellers. Frankly, I don’t think most dealers did a good job selling them. Blowpokes didn’t fit into fireplace tool sets. Bright brass went out of fashion. And some of the rustic blowpokers were a bit too shoddy and poor performing for many  customers.

That’s the market we found when we began building blowpokers. We saw there might be an opportunity to offer better AIR BLOWING Performance – with a better poker tip – plus easy 1-hand handling, which no one else was making.We also found that almost everyone who tried, preferred shorter than 4-feet long.

Lately interest in blowpokes has grown. It appears to be a combination of

  • the boom in retail internet sales,
  • and with the growing popularity of fire pits – from small table tops and kettles to big in-ground fire pits.
  • And recently we’ve noticed new buyers searches with new names for the blowpoke. New names invented by people who may have seen one in use or heard about it, but didn’t catch the name. Names like fireplace blower tools, firestick blowers, and firepipe pokers.
  • Another new name is FireDragon, the 36″ import from China with the low cost, 2-part soldered brass mouthpiece.
  • The FireDragon, although shorter than most, appeared only on Amazon. And it was priced at roughly half the price of other blowpokes.

That’s part of the reason Vineyard Firetools now offers an even lower priced 36″ blowpoker. We’ve come to recognize that size as a new category, just like all of the solid brass 4-footers with small poke tips from various makers are in a “class”

With all that activity, it seem like there should be a lot more blow pokes around. But with more than a decade of experience making and selling blow pokes, I am constantly surprised. Most people – even experienced wood burners – have never seen or used one, even in the New England area. And more broadly across the country, very few Americans have even heard of “blow pokes”, much less know what they can do.

I suspect this had to do with the fact that by the time this was invented, America had moved past wood burning for home heating and had entered the fossil fuel age. We were heating homes with coal, oil, gas and electric baseboard heaters. Wood fires became more of a holiday tradition for most families with fireplaces.

And later in the 1970’s with the Arab Oil Embargo, wood stoves became a huge craze and took over many fireplaces with their claim of efficiency. That efficiency, along with regulations favoring lower emissions has led to expensive permits and zoning restrictions on new construction, and fewer open fireplaces. And the fireplace industry also led the charge with their effort to convert fireplaces from natural wood to “clean gas” and fake-log fires. And the introducion of pellet stoves which operate mechanically. 

 

What inspired the BlowPoke’s design?

The inventor’s inspiration was seeing someone use “an old rifle to blow and poke a fire.” Poking a fire was not new. But blowing through a tube to turbo-charge a fire – that was novel! And judged worthy of a US Patent!

A original blow pokes are Primarily an AIR-BLOWING tool. Secondarily it’s a POKE. It is not a poker. The mouthpiece

was a unique addition to a fireplace tool. And so was the little pointed Brass blow pokes’ tips with a tiny 5/8” small fin that is clearly less effective than a regular fire poker’s tang. And their long weighty brass or steel tubes are too heavy to handle as effectively as a standard fireplace poker. You need to use two hands, and support it near the middle. So you’re actually holding it half way down its length. Making it half as long as you think it is!

Still pretty damn exciting, if you ask me. Clearly a tool for blowing, and a tip that keeps out embers, plus a tiny tang that won’t break the brass tube. All good. Except for the fact that by 1941 America was rapidly switching from firewood to coal and oil for heating. So to quote CONTROL Agent Maxwell Smart. “He missed it by that much.”

 

Why are Blow Pokes’ tips so small?

It’s very likely that originally, the small-fin blowpoke-tip may have been crafted more as a plug or restrictor to cap the wide open tube. Brass tubes have to be wider and thick-walled to prevent bending. Brass is not a “structural” metal. A thiner-walled brass tube will bend too easily. But a 5/8″ wide tube needs something to prevent embers from getting jammed in the wide tube’s opening. Presto! A poke-tip that plugs the tube – and has small side ports for air to blow out. I personally appreciate its very elegant design. Adding the small fin was an artful touch that also added some “Pull” capability without creating much stress for either the brass tube or the little brass pins that secure the poke tip. The original inspiration was a straight rifle. So the inventor added 2 innovations: the poke tip that is also a wide tube restrictor, and the mouthpiece.

 

The Mouthpiece was also an inspired addition.

The Mouthpiece tells you this is safe to put it to your mouth. A Gun barrel does not say the same thing. Neither does a long metal tube. Putting a straight “sharp edged” tube in your mouth – especially for the first time – just feels scary and dangerous. But a nicely crafted, smooth broad polished brass mouthpiece is rather inviting, asking you to give it a try.

 

Why is the Poke Tip designed like a Harpoon Tip?

Most blow pokes appear almost modeled after old Edgartown whaling harpoons. The inventor grew up as a child on the coast of Maine – where much of the old US Whaling Fleet was retired – docked or moored among the hundreds of tall ships “mothballed” or Afloat-at-Bay, since the rise of steamships. Still, for young men of that time in rural Pre-WW1 America, there was a real sense of romance with whaling; going to sea was every coastal young man’s adventure!

A few years back, Mr. Smith’s niece bought one of our Vineyard Firetool Blowpokes and told me that she still has her Uncle’s original Blo-poke tip prototype which she remembers first seeing as a child. It was – and is – a Christmas tree decoration!

 

Why were early BlowPokes made of Brass?

That’s a good question. I suspect that, as today, brass connoted a bright, shiny golden value. It helped make the work worth the effort. Brass fireplace tools were the top tier choice, and had been the top selling fireplace accessory finish during Victorian era that immediately preceded the invention and the inventor. At the time, Brass was probably not considered “Antique”. Back then it signaled high quality fireplace accessory. It also helped the new tool command attention.

 

Harpoons may have been an inspiration for the original blows’ poke-tip-plug design.

The original harpoon inspired “fin” tip has been “copied” by product-imitators ever since. Most blow poke tools are also made to appear “Antique”, This includes both the heavy iron-style, the heavy iron and wood style, and all of the heavy brass blowpokes. In fact, the Blowpoke may be the only NEW INVENTION that is made to look like it is an Antique.  Unfortunately, this generally means heavy “antique” materials and less precise “antique” joinery. The primary focus is less about performance. That includes both Air Blow Blowing Performance and Handling Performance as a long poker.

 

Blow Pokers came along later.

After the patent expired in 1960, imitations became legal. And eventually, fireplace industry wholesalers imported blow pokes made with a more useful Poker tang, which could be fabricated on cheaper steel models – but not on brass. Brass does not bond well, not even with other brass. Brass is a weak alloy of copper and zinc. So Brass joints are pinned, pressed or glued. Reheated, it can dissolve into it’s copper and zinc. But these blow pokers were just as heavy, and difficult to wield. And most have surprisingly small Air Blow-holes that restrict the ability to create optimal AIR FLOW.

 

Most surprisingly, the Focus of most Blow Poke marketing copy is Length and Color.

  • Not AIR-FLOW Performance.
  • Not ease of handling.
  • Not Light Weight.
  • And all are heavy.

It makes you wonder if the makers/importers really use them, or if they are just covering the base with the same old copy of old Mr. Smith’s “harpoon”. Ultra-coincidentally, most models cluster at the 48-inch length. The newest “Extra Long” is just 36-inches. (But it’s low price is attractive.) Call me skeptical, but these look suspiciously like SHIPPING BOX SIZES: 3 or 4 feet long.

Coincidence?

 

I have not seen Blow Pokes in Fireplace Tool Sets.

I think it goes to show just how little the blowpoke has infiltrated the national conciousness. All of the hundreds of fireplace toolsets available at retail and you can’t find any fireplace tool sets that have a blowpoke. That’s really interesting since a good blowpoke really works well at starting fires and controlling smokey fires. Those are two capabilities that fireplace toolsets lack. And simply modifying the fire poker could lay some claim to addressing it. But even that hasn’t happened.

Why? I think it may be a combination of reasons like

  • inertia in the industry
  • lack of awareness (demand) on consumers’ part
  • lack of awareness by the sellers’ (middlemen)
  • and reluctance to raise the cost.
  • Understanding that it should be longer
  • Following the “inside the box” wisdom of the Cardboard Box Authority
  • and the shunting to the side of the Hearth. It is no longer the focal point of the Home.

bottom-crack-historyComing around full story: We did not invent the blowpoke, but when our original brass blowpoke cracked, we needed another. And I got kind of fixated on wanting a better blowpoke.

BlowPokes look simple. But it is really 2 tools.

  1. Blower – the primary tool (mouthpiece, long tube).
  2. Long Poke or Poker – is the extra tool (poker tip).

So I really wanted 2 Better Blowpokes.

And that insight was key. It got us to focus on every detail from multiple perspectives. Comparing everything – to understand what works better. And Why? What might make it better? Eventually we learned how to make a blowpoke that delivered better Air Flow Poerformance and Better Poker Handling.

Having a background building lightweight racing mountain bikes back in the early days of mountain bike building in the US. I was already very familiar with the performance advantages and strength of 4130 CroMoly Steel tubing. Cromoly is the secret ingredient that made the bikes strong and light.

I wasn’t trying to copy or “antique” previous blowpoke designs. I approached it more as a product manager who wanted to make a firetool that worked better – performed better.

  • Better AIR FLOW Performance to Start Fires FASTER, and save SMOKEY fires..
  • Better Mouthpiece, unbreakable, polished, and a pretty good kisser.
  • LIGHT WEIGHT for Ease of Handling make a big difference when the poker tip works to Push, Pull, Lift and Move up logs that weigh as much as 50 pounds.

There are a couple of reasons why we’re offering to sell them. Mostly it’s because we found that many others appreciate better performance, too. We all know this is not a BIG opportunity. In fact it’s a really small niche. So many people with fireplaces don’t even burn wood anymore – having bought fireplace-Fake-Log gas conversions, or installed wood stoves. And many people who do burn wood know they can keep tending fires the same old way with the same old tools that they already use. And, for any potential blowpoke buyers, there are already a lot of nifty harpoon-like antique-looking shiny and rustic cheaply-imported blow pokes to be had.

I like that Firewood is Not a Fossil Fuel.

We have a rapidly advancing scientific consensus that points to the catastrophic negative impacts created by the burning of fossil fuels – oil and “natural gas” – which is primarily methane. Worldwide, every day we are apparently burning approximately 80 million tons of oil – every day, plus untold tonnage of coal and natural gas. That’s a lot of fossil fuels we burn every week, all year. But I don’t see much value coming out of arguing about it. Instead, I thought that having a better blowpoke might help some people decide to enjoy a nice warm fire – instead of just cranking up the ol’ thermostat to fire up more fossil fuels… I was intrigued by the awareness that Wood Is Not A Fossil Fuel. And that Wood’s Carbon Is Part of The Atmosphere – unlike coal, oil and gas that was all naturally sequestered underground. You don’t hear much about that.

We know that wood’s Carbon is already “in the atmosphere.” And that wood’s carbon will continue to cycle naturally through the atmosphere whether we burn it for heat, or let it rot – eaten by bugs. Given that option – it makes sense to burn our seasoned fire wood for efficient heat when we can, instead of needlessly consuming more fossil fuels.

After we learned we can make a better performing Blowpoke, we decided to build and offer what we learned. And let you choose.
